About the American Lung Association

The American Lung Association is the leading organization working to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through education, advocacy and research. For more than 100 years, we have led the fight for healthy lungs and healthy air, whether it’s searching for cures to lung diseases, keeping kids off tobacco, or fighting for laws that protect the air we all breathe.

Our Mission: To save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.

Below are a few of the accomplishments by the Gulfcoast of Florida office throughout the last year:

  • 75 children and parents attended Camp Boggy Creek sessions throughout the year. They were given resources to help control asthma, keeping the kids out of the emergency room and in the classroom.
  • Over 100 children from various Elementary schools completed Open Airways for Schools (OAS). OAS is a program that educates and empowers children through a fun and interactive approach to asthma self-management.
  • 350 people received support from 10 Better Breathers Clubs. BBCs offer the opportunity to learn ways to better cope with COPD and other lung diseases, while receiving the support of others who share similar struggles.
  • 200 elementary students received tobacco education.
  • 82 people took part in 13 Freedom From Smoking clinics to get support on their journey to quit smoking.
  • Our local Ft. Myers office, along with other community businesses (i.e. Florida South Western State College) and coalitions, implemented the Suncoast Pulmonary Symposium supporting 275 attendees from the medical profession.
  • 350 calls were taken by the Lung Help Line from Gulfcoast residents to address questions about lung health and lung disease.
  • Reached more than 100 businesses and multi-housing units with “Smoke-Free” and “Tobacco-Free” initiative with a grant from the Department of Health – Lee County.
  • Thousands of dollars were raised for lung disease research.

How Your Support Helps

Your support helps in the Fight For Air. With lung disease on the rise, we are fighting for research that will find a cure for tomorrow. We are fighting for those who can’t quit smoking and those who shouldn’t start. We are fighting for lungs that burn from exercise rather than from ozone. We are fighting for asthma education to stop children from dying from asthma attacks. We are fighting for laws that improve air quality both inside and out. As we won’t breathe easy until we win the fight.
